Geophagus pellegrini, commonly known as the Redhump Eartheater, is known for its peaceful temperament and unique sifting behavior. The species thrives in well-aerated aquariums with sandy substrates to mimic its natural habitat where it uses its specialized mouth to sift through the substrate in search of food. To keep this fish, a spacious tank is preferable, with plenty of swimming space and hiding spots. Preferred tank mates include similar-sized, peaceful cichlids and larger tetras. Avoid keeping them with overly aggressive species. Ensure regular tank maintenance and water quality checks. This species is fond of digging, so avoid planting rooted plants directly in the substrate, as they may uproot them during their natural sifting.
